The Simple Facts About Legal Marijuana in Maine

Recreational use of marijuana became legal in Maine on January 30, 2017.  But just what is legal?

Here are some details:

  • Use of grass is legal for anyone over 21.
  • As of yet, sales ARE STILL NOT LEGAL.  You must either grow your own or receive it as a gift.
  • The law allows possession of up to 2.5 ounces per person. You may also give a friend up to 2.5 ounces.
  • You may not smoke weed in public.  You may smoke in a private home or in a state licensed marijuana social club.
  • Social clubs are described in the law but regulations have to be worked out and you aren’t likely to find them for at least a year.
  • Sales are also at least a year away, and many individual communities have already placed bans or moratoriums on sales.
  • You cannot buy from current dispensaries unless you have a card from your doctor. The medical marijuana rules have not changed.
  • Here’s what you can grow:
    1. Individuals may have up to six mature plants, 12 immature plants and an unlimited number of seedlings.  You must prevent access to anyone under 21 and it may not be visible to others. Plants must be tagged with your name and Maine drivers license number.
